Introduction -Our project is a Space heater/ Hair Dryer combination. It's a Personal Heater that can transform into a hair-drying appliance. Here is how it works. The heater uses 120V straight from the wall. The electricity runs through a circuit to a coiled wire, which heats up via the high voltage. Then at the end of the coil the wire goes to a small electrical fan that blows air towards the coil of wire, thus heating the air. The fan will have three settings. High, Medium, and Low. These are used for obvious reasons.

• Introduction Part 2 -The hair dryer is the same appliance but in a transformed state. The legs fold under the device and form a handle. From where the air blows out, a tube extends out directing the air for blow dryer like quality. The fan has an extra setting that is used solely for the hair dryer. This makes drying your hair easier. When the tube contracts back in this setting is disabled.reassemble the space heater, unfold the legs and push the tube back into the unit, or by using the lever on the side.

• Force in Mechanical Systems -Force is used in the Space Heater/Hair Dryer by applying a force of 1.5lbs to a button in order to start the fan spinning, and to also make the coils start to heat up. There is also a force applied to the handle. In order to fold the handle, you have to push with a force of 2.3lbs, down (South). Or to unfold it, pull with a force of 2.3lbs up (North) Force is also applied to our Space Heater/Hair Dryer when you pull the nozzle out for the Hair Dryer mode. There is a lever to the side, which you have to apply a force of 1.0lbs to either pull out, or push back into the unit.

• Torque- Torque is also used in our project in the handle. Each arm of the handle is also a lever arm. There is a Force applied to each lever arm. That force is 2.3lbs. Each lever arm is 3 inches long. In order to figure out the torque applied to each arm, multiply the force and the lever arm length.  The answer is either in Lb.Ft or N.M.

• Voltage in Electrical Systems-Our Space Heater/Hair Dryer voltage source comes from the wall. It is supplied by a 120V- which is alternating current. The electricity flows from the wall and through a circuit. Along the way the electricity flows through a few pieces of coiled wire. The wires are parallel to each other, so the electricity splits and heats all of the coils up. When it passes through all of the wires, it goes back into one wire. Then the electricity goes to a fan that is behind the wires. The electricity runs through a motor that causes the fan to spin.

• Electricity -The Space Heater/Hair Dryer's fan has three settings in the Space Heater mode. There are three buttons on the handle, which control the speed of the fan. The bottom button is Low. When you push it, it is connected to a switch that only lets 30V of electricity to the fan. This makes the fan spin very slowly. The middle button is Medium. When this button is pushed, the switch lets 60V of electricity to the fan. This makes the fan spin twice as fast as the low setting. The top Button is High. When pushed, it lets 90V of electricity into the fan. This setting is twice as fast as the Medium setting. There is also another button, but it is blocked off when the legs are bent.

• Variable Elecricity -The fan has four settings when its is in the Hair Dryer mode. It works the same way as the Space Heater, except for one thing. When the legs are folded under, another button is exposed. This button lets all 120V into the fan. This makes the fan spin more than twice as fast as the High setting on the personal heater. Since hair takes along time to dry, this setting is available in the Hair Dryer mode only. This setting is the fastest of all.

• Temperature in Thermal Systems -As stated before, the electricity runs through the coil of wire and causes it to heat up. The area around the wire is all insulated to prevent a fire from breaking out. The maximum temperature of the coils is 160(F. This temperature rarely, if ever, reached this high because of the fan behind the wires. The air from the fan is sent through the coils of wire, which heats the air. The air then flows out of the heater and into the air of the room, or directly to your hair to dry it. The air being heated by the coils and then heating the air in the room, or your hair, is known as convection.
